Aerodynamics is not only restricted to the prediction of classical aerodynamic quantities like lift and drag for aircrafts and ground transportation vehicles, that is surface loads from pressure and sheer stresses. We are also targeting particle related issues like transport, tracing and sedimentation of dust and snow. Besides we simulate and analyze ambitious dynamic effects like wake interference of moving bodies, i.e. vehicle passing maneuvers or flow interactions in windmill power plants.
As we know about the sensitivity of boundary layers onto exterior flow fields we take special car of meshing the near-wall regions and choosing appropriate turbulence models. Likewise we treat wake and sheer flows with great care taking also transient effects into account.
Careful modelling of boundary layers and sheer flows is also a requirement for simulations related to acoustics and thermal transport.
In combination with the heat transfer equations aerodynamics application become powerful in detecting hot spots like at the car's rear-end where hot exhaust gas may be trapped in areas with recirculating air which may damage nearby plastic design covers.
